Fuselage Join!

Hours Worked = 5

Big night tonight! The front and rear halves of the fuselage are now a single piece!

To reach this occasion, I started by bolting and riveting the front spar to the front fuse assembly. Then I lined the two halves up, installed the temp spacers (which will leave the proper gap for the wings to be bolted on in the future), and bolt it all together! I used some standard hardware bolts for now, as I don’t want to use the expensive close tolerance bolts until the wings are ready to be installed for the last time.

With the two halves bolted into a single piece, it was time to rivet the bottom skins to the spars. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, the two skins overlap at the spars. To get access to these rivets, I needed to do some tricky rope tricks, and suspended the entire fuselage on it’s side. It’s hard to see in the video, but it’s stabilized by ropes running to a hook in the ceiling and a 2×4 screwed to the bench at the tail end. The actual weight of the fuse is still held by the bench at the spar.

I once again enlisted the help of my lovely rivet assistant, and we got it all riveted together!
