Family gets plane back after paint… family wants to fly!!
So when Ed said there was an RV Fly-in in Boone, IA, I was like fer SURE!
Hold on. First I was like “Moon, IA?” Wow, it’s just meant to be ’cause there’s a full moo ….
Ed: “No, Boone, IA”
Colleen: “Boom, IA?” (EJ: BOOM!!!)
Ed: “No hon, BooNe…”
Colleen: “OH! Like Boone from LOST, Boone. Got it..”
Anyhoo, so you know what that means… Ed stays up till 2AM making sure everything is perfect so we can get in the air early the next morning. Which felt vaguely similar to our building phase, except we have a flying, airworthy airplane at the end of the night… so, Yay.. go hon!
It was the first time EJ and I saw it with paint so we were both pretty excited! I was especially nervous thinking of the hours and hours we poured over the paint scheme, the countless back and forths with the designer, and the many, many paint chips we tested in every light imaginable. My expectations were SO high, how could it POSSIBLY live up to them. But I’m happy to report we are jazzed about the paint. If you missed the paint post, read more about that here.
EJ, being all patient. Got his OSH hat on and his airplane shirt 😉
EJ reading off our N number… who knows the meaning of our number??
And after final checks we were off!
After numerous selfies, EJ HAD to have me take a pic of his tractor… like what’s better than airplanes AND tractors??
And after a little over an hour, we landed in Boone (not Moon or Boom), IA. We were happy to see many of our flying friends and were probably the last folks who went through the lunch line. Sorry we were the “tail-draggers” people of Boone! Thanks for keeping lunch open. So much airplane talk, so little time…
And after a yummy good ‘ol BBQ lunch and chatting with friends, we headed home… I was a hot day, not bad once we got up to altitude, but man, we were all sweating taxing on the runway.
And guess who fell asleep?
Did you notice that?
The white cord coming off EJ’s headset? That’s a parenting gem right there (or embarrassing parenting moment – either way). Every time EJ would fall asleep his head would jerk forward and his headset would fall down.
iphone charge cord to the rescue! Tie that sucker back… Yea, that’s an issue we’ll probably need to figure out. Any thoughts or recommendations from our flying friends out there?
Back on the ground we had a tired, hot, cranky baby… so we went out for ice cream!
And finished the day off with some watermelon re-hydration at home. Here’s to getting sloppy and spitting seeds!
Great!
Your plane looks awesome Colleen & Ed!! Nice to have spent little time chatting with both of you!…and EJ! Congratulations on a beautiful plane.
If you guys ever make it to KAPA let me know. I can meet you at my fire station and show you guys the ARFF rigs.
That would be amazing!!! (And I think EJ loves fire and rescue as much as airplanes. He loves to fly around the house and “put out fires”)
You tell me when! You should have my email now so if you guys do shoot me a email
